Christa Päffgen, known by Nico for her career, was a German model, actress and singer. After making the acquaintance of Andy Warhol, she quickly became of his muses, having her featured in several films, including Chelsea Girls, and having her perform with the Velvet Underground. After touring the world extensively, Nico died at the age of 49 due to a stroke.

Andy Warhol insisted that Nico perform vocals on The Velvet Undergrounds debut album. On this album, femininity and fashionare sang about in an empowering and innovative way.

After leaving The Velvet Underground, Nico released the album Chelsea Girls in 1967 that was inspired by her work with Andy Warhol on the film Chelsea Girls. The subject of this "Chelsea Girls" piece differs greatly from the previously studied works.
